Introduction - Hunkering Down

As a native Houstonian, I have personally experienced two hurricanes (Alicia & Ike), a tropical storm (TS Allison), a citywide evacuation (Hurricane Rita) and have also volunteered at the George R Brown to help Katrina victims. However, every year I go to the grocery store in spring to stock up on hurricane supplies, I get laughed at.

In April 2008 a cashier asked me what all the canned food was for, I honestly replied, “For the Hurricane!” The cashier laughed and asked “What Hurricane?” In September, she had her answer.

As Ike approached, it seemed that everyone in Houston was frantically raiding the grocery stores, waiting half an hour (or more) in line to fill up their gas tanks or fighting in home improvement stores over the last sheet of plywood.

I wasn’t! I simply rechecked my supplies and relaxed until the power went off. Sound nice? If you’d like to be able to relax before a hurricane then keep reading and learn how to properly prepare ahead of time.

Let's get ready to Hunker Down!
